“What Matters to Me and Why” is a UCI speaker series that shares personal journeys, values, and motivations to strengthen community bonds.

Sherwynn Umali has spent over 20 years at UC Irvine in various roles. She currently serves as the deputy chief of staff for the Division of Student Affairs, where she focuses on strategic initiatives and manages the division's communications and marketing work.

Before this role, she spent nine years as associate dean of students in Student Life & Leadership, overseeing a wide range of programs including the Basic Needs Center, Campus Organizations & Volunteer Programs, Sorority & Fraternity Life, LGBT Resource Center, DREAM Center, Womxn's Center for Success, the Latinx Resource Center, and others.

Outside of UCI, Sherwynn serves as a consultant with private sector and non-profit organizations on communication, leadership, team dynamics, organizational change, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. She's also a freelance graphic designer and photographer, which keeps the creative side of her brain happy.

She earned a B.A. from UC Irvine, and an M.A. in Education, Leadership, and Policy Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park. Outside of work, Sherwynn loves living in Orange County with her college sweetheart, two kids, two dogs, and a couple reptiles who mostly mind their own business.
