Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, and Sam Cooke were all legendary Motown and soul artists who loved jazz. Their hits are instantly recognizable – "Respect," "‘Til You Come Back to Me,: "Georgia on My Mind," "Ain’t No Mountain High Enough," "You Send Me," and era-defining anthems like "What’s Going On" and "A Change is Gonna Come." A trio of knockout artists unite to conclude The Barclay Jazz & Beyond Orchestra’s season with specially written new jazz arrangements of Motown’s greatest hits.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

Grammy winner Lisa Fischer has thrilled audiences around the world, singing with the Rolling Stones, Luther Vandross, Sting, and Tina Turner. Her singing has been called “Addictive. . . Every performance is so enriching, so exciting, so transcendent that you want more” (Minneapolis Star Tribune).

For thirty years, saxophonist Everette Harp has been a mainstay in the contemporary jazz scene, with hit albums on Blue Note and other top labels, as well as tours and recordings with George Duke, Marcus Miller, Patti LaBelle and others.

Billy Valentine absolutely inhabits the spirit of Ray Charles and the great soul singers. His concerts have been called “a masterclass in soul interpretation.”

Shelly Berg—an in-demand music director, bandleader, arranger, composer and pianist—is the artistic director for The Jazz Cruises, artistic advisor for the Jazz Roots series at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami and Dean of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.
