Collaborating with the Bowers Museum, Illuminations offers UCI students a once-in-a-lifetime experience: The World of Terracotta Warrior Exhibition: New Archaeological Discoveries in Shaanxi in the 21st Century, with a special guided tour by Dr. Tianlong Jiao, the Vice President and Chief Curator of the Bowers Museum.

The terracotta warriors were great artistic achievements in ancient China from two millennia ago. They were part of the legacy of Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor from the Qin Dynasty (221-207BCE). The first discovery of the terracotta army pit was in 1970s in Shaanxi province in northern China. The archaeological findings revealed the ancient Chinese belief systems, aesthetics, philosophy, and technology. The excavation is still going on today. In addition to the terracotta army and artifacts from the Qin Dynasty, the current Bowers exhibition also includes exciting new discoveries in the 21st century, such as some neolithic findings from around 2300BCE!

Dr. Tianlong Jiao is an expert in Chinese and Pacific art history and archaeology. He will conduct a special tour for the Anteaters! You will have a chance to see the famous terracotta warriors and other precious art pieces up close and learn about Dr. Jiao’s expertise. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity!
