Dr. Tianlong Jiao: World of Terracotta Warriors
October 9, 2-4:30pm
Humanities Gateway 1030
Wonderful news! Do you know that The Terracotta Warriors from ancient China are in town? The Anteater community will have a great opportunity to meet and learn from the expert, Dr. Tianlong Jiao, the Vice President and Chief Curator of Bowers Museum. “The World of Terracotta Warriors” is the current special exhibition at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana.
The Terracotta Warriors were great artistic achievements in ancient China from two millennia ago. They were part of the legacy of Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor from the Qin Dynasty (221-207BCE). The first discovery of the terracotta army pit was in 1970s in Shaanxi province in northern China. The archaeological findings revealed the ancient Chinese belief systems, aesthetics, philosophy, and technology. The excavation is still going on today. In addition to the terracotta army and artifacts from the Qin Dynasty, the current Bowers exhibition also includes exciting new discoveries in the 21st century, such as some neolithic findings from around 2300BCE!
Dr. Tianglong Jiao received his PhD from Harvard University and is an expert in Chinese and Pacific art history and archaeology. He has more than two decades of curatorial and academic experience in the U.S. and China and has published eight books and more than a hundred articles. Dr. Jiao’s talk will cover an introduction of the Terracotta Warriors, the recent archaeological findings, and the current exhibit at the Bowers Museum.
Q&A and a reception of light refreshments will immediately follow Dr. Jiao’s talk.
