Imagine this: Burgers without fries, fish sin “chips,” a latke-less Hanukkah or a mashed potato free Thanksgiving—a world without potatoes seems very sad!
The indigenous people from Peru and Bolivia had potatoes for thousands of years before the export to the “old world” (Europe and Asia) in the 16th century. This nutritious stable has played a key role in sustaining and enriching human lives for thousands of years. To celebrate the Native American Heritage Month, Illuminations wants to bring awareness to one of the most important indigenous foods from the Americas—potatoes (“papas” in Quechua, one of the major indigenous languages of the Andes).
This event features a lecture, a music performance, and a free lunch! Alain Patrick Dlugosz Salas will join us from Peru to speak about the cosmology, agricultural practice, and ancestral cultural traditions of the Andes. Fabricio Cavero, a composer and UCI PhD student in Music from Peru, will play some Andean tunes, including songs for potatoes. Chef Stephie and the team will cook us a meal of a variety of potatoes! This is the time to appreciate the gift from the indigenous people of the Americas.
Alain Patrick Dlugosz Salas is a Peruvian researcher, farmer, educator, artist, philosopher, and environmental activist, who is dedicated to the study and preservation of Andean and ancestral cultural traditions. He is the founder of the Network of Seed Guardians of the Americas (Red Semilla de Libertad) and the Peruvian Network of Seed Guardians and Ecosystems. An expert in horticulture and permaculture, he advocates linking agroecology, food sovereignty, intercultural pedagogy, and seed preservation as cultural, spiritual, and educational heritage.
Please bring your own utensils and water cups/bottles. You are encouraged to bring a reusable container for extra food. These are the Anteater ways to express our love and respect for the environment.
