How many languages do you speak or read comfortably? What is your native (or near native) tongue? Can you switch between languages smoothly? Maybe you speak a kind of hybrid language, such as Spanglish, Chinglish, or Singlish? Jeremy Tiang, the 2024 Obie Award winning playwright will speak about negotiating among different linguistic terrains, both as a creative writer and translator.

Jeremy Tiang is a playwright, novelist and translator. His bilingual play Salesman之死 won the 2024 Obie Award for Outstanding New Play. Other plays written by him include A Dream of Red Pavilions and The Last Days of Limehouse. He was longlisted for the International Booker Prize for his translation of Zou Jingzhi's Ninth Building and won the Singapore Literature Prize for his novel State of Emergency. As a translator, he has translated over thirty books from across the Sinophone region, including novels by Zhang Yueran, Yan Ge, Ping Lu, Lo Yi-Chin, Yeng Pway Ngon and Huang Chong-Kai. He is the co-editor (with Kavita Bhanot) of Violent Phenomena: Essays Toward the Future of Literary Translation. Originally from Singapore, Jeremy Tiang now lives in New York City.
