Sita Michelle Coltrane is a musician, vocalist, and composer. She is the daughter Alice and John Coltrane and the Artistic Director of the John & Alice Coltrane Home in Dix Hills, New York. She furthers her family legacy through her leadership on Coltrane projects including The John & Alice Coltrane Home.
She was born in Paris, France. Her immersion in music began at an early age with violin, viola, and clarinet lessons as well as singing in an ensemble at the ashram founded by her mother Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda. Michelle Coltrane began traveling the world in her mid-20s, living in Japan while performing, composing, and DJing. She maintains a busy touring and recording career today. This is part of the Illuminations series that celebrates the African American Heritage Month and the centennial of Miles Davis (1926-1991) and John Coltrane (1926-1967).
Michelle Coltrane will present an oral history of her parents’ life, music, and legacy as two of the great pioneers in the history of jazz music.
