Innovative, non-profit initiatives that improve lives in historically disadvantaged communities are exceptionally difficult to accomplish, not least because of both financial constraints and on-going challenges of community engagement. Ricardo Muñiz has taken on these challenges. Muñiz is the Community Engagement Advisor at THRIVE Santa Ana, a community land trust that has built a thriving community-owned urban farm in Santa Ana, along with adjacent, worker-led businesses. In coming years, THRIVE Santa Ana will develop additional properties, all rooted in community ownership, grassroots organizing, and commitment to transformative justice. THRIVE Santa Ana’s mission is to put more land in community hands.

In this student-led dialogue, Muñiz will be asked to share his experiences, and what he has learned along the way – about people and how to engage communities; about working with government to build community benefits; about non-profit project management; and about land trusts and cooperative business models.
