Film Screening: Underground (2024) and Q&A with Director Kaori Oda

Kaori Oda, one of Japan’s foremost contemporary documentary filmmakers, will join us for a screening of their 2024 film Underground, followed by a live Q&A. Shot entirely on 16mm film, Underground poetically traces the subterranean landscapes of Japan in order to exhume buried histories, including the wartime violence inflicted upon the islands of Okinawa. From Variety magazine: “Underground is the culmination of a three-year process that took Oda from Japan’s northmost main island of Hokkaido, where she filmed in the Sapporo subway, to Okinawa, the country’s southern-most prefecture, where she recorded a local historian explaining how Okinawans hidden in caves during the 1945 invasion by U.S. forces survived – and in some cases died by group suicide. ‘I wanted to depict a longer period of time and various spaces,’ Oda commented.” Visit: http://fieldrain.net/
