From Lived Experience to Acting: Playwright Workshop with Clayton Nascimento

Brazilian actor and playwright Clayton Nascimento, author of and actor in the award-winning and worldwide celebrated monologue “MA-CA-COS” (“MON-KEYS”), will offer two workshops (on acting and playwriting, respectively) to the UCI community.

In the award-winning monologue “MA-CA-COS” (“MON-KEYS”), Brazilian actor and playwright Clayton Nascimento sheds light on his life as an Afro-Brazilian man in one of the countries where young men like him are most often murdered by the police. The monologue became famous for its political and theatrical intensity, blending biting humor with social critique. One of its most notable achievements was bringing attention to the case of Eduardo, a Brazilian boy murdered by police in 2015, which led to the case being reopened in Brazilian courts.

During his stay at UC Irvine, Clayton Nascimento will offer two one-hour workshops to our community. The first, a playwright workshop based on “MA-CA-COS,” will encourage participants to draw on their lived experience to shape a monologue or play (October 22nd, 12-1 p.m.). The second, an acting workshop, will invite participants to explore their bodies' expressive capacities in an easygoing atmosphere (October 23rd, 12-1 p.m.). Both workshops will be offered in English and open to all. Come ready to move, think, laugh, experiment, and learn with Clayton. No theater or creative writing background required.
