Mark your calendars for the return of one of GFH's most celebrated events! Following last year's overwhelming success—where 97% of attendees requested the event return in 2026, and 92% reported a stronger sense of community and belonging—Black Hair Care Wellness is back!
For many, hair is a symbol of identity, resistance, creative expression, and freedom. This collaborative event, presented by the GFH Affinity Group in partnership with UC Irvine School of Medicine LEAD ABC Scholars, the Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA), and the Center for Black Cultures, Resources and Research (CBCRR), brings together professional hair stylists, barbers, UCI faculty, staff, students, and families for an afternoon of radical self-care and community building.
What to Expect:
Get Your Hair Done! – Professional barbers and stylists will be on-site to provide complimentary styling and cuts (spots are limited, first come first served). *** MUST COME WITH HAIR WASHED AND BLOW DRIED TO BE SERVICED ***
Live Braiding Demonstrations – Join stylist Cherish Wylie for multiple interactive sessions throughout the afternoon as she demonstrates cornrows, single braids, and extension techniques. Learn practical tips and styling methods you can use with confidence
Ask a Dermatologist – Stop by our Scalp Health table to meet Dr. Sophia Ederaine, a resident dermatologist and 2025 Sephora Squad member. Get your scalp and hair questions answered in a welcoming, judgment-free space, and take home a free guide on protective and low-tension hairstyles designed to promote hair growth and long-term hair health
Authentic New Orleans Cuisine – Enjoy a delicious catered meal by renowned New Orleans Chef Bergeron—this culinary experience alone is worth the visit!
Family-Friendly Activities – "I Love My Hair" Craft Corner features games and age-appropriate activities to keep kids engaged and entertained throughout the event
Live Music & Community Vibes – KUCI DJs will be spinning tracks all afternoon to create the perfect atmosphere for connection and celebration
Raffle Prizes – Enter to win hair care product bundles and other exciting prizes!
Complimentary Products & Resources – Explore organic hair products and take home helpful resources about Black hair care practices and their cultural significance
Join us in celebrating Black hair while fostering campus-wide community. This is more than an event—it's a celebration of culture, identity, and belonging.
Special Note: Children are welcomed! If you plan on bringing a child under the age of 12, please note that in your RSVP. We'll have plenty of activities to keep them engaged with age-appropriate fun!
