How far have you traveled from your hometown to study at UCI? What is the food you miss most when you live on campus? Have you ever tried to recreate the taste of home when you are far away from home?
Illuminations launches a new series: Family Recipes Show & Tell (& Eat)! We invite students to share their family recipes and stories, demonstrate the cooking process, and enjoy the food with fellow Anteaters. Our first event features tasty snacks from different regions of India, which will be served with chai (Indian tea). Jemini Sara Nainan (PhD student of Anthropology) will try to recreate her favorite childhood street food – banana fritters (pazham pori, in Malayalam language) from Kerala (southern India). Aakritti Bisht (PhD student of Education) will teach us how to make her grandmother’s flatbread (mandua roti) and green garlic sauce (lehsun namak) from the Garhwali community in the Himalayan region (northern India). The families of Jemini and Aakritti speak very different languages and are almost 2000 miles apart; they might never have a chance to meet in India. However, both as PhD students at UCI (8000-9000 miles away from India), Jemini and Aakritti will be in the same kitchen space, sharing their home cooking and nostalgia with us. With steaming sweet and savory snacks, delicious chai, and amiable company, we create a new home away from home.
