Beautifully restored and re-edited by its director after years of heavy censorship for its political and sexual content, Patrick Tam’s Nomad is glittering example of the Hong Kong New Wave at its best. The film follows four listless young people — Louis (Leslie Cheung), his cousin Kathy (Pat Ha), and new friends Pong (Kent Tong) and Tomato (Cecilia Yip) — whose intertwined, hedonistic lives of work, romance, fashion, and David Bowie fandom stall as the pressures of the political world press inwards, leading to a dramatic and bloody climax. Nomad is a stunning yet cynical work, depicting the anxiety of those who feel the riptide of history about their ankles. To see the work of an underrated master like Tam on the big screen is a rare privilege not to be missed.
