The UC Irvine Initiative to End Family Violence welcomes Professor Tianna N. Gibbs to discuss "Legal Abuse as a Continuation of Coercive Control."

Our conception of “family violence” is too narrow. We limit family violence to violence within families — intimate partner violence, domestic violence, and child abuse. This perception of family violence fails to account for the role of violence by the state and other institutions against families. Two guiding principles can expand our lens: (1) focus on structure; and (2) center difference rather than sameness. The session will examine the consequences of our narrow view, particularly for families at the margins. The goal of the session is to foster dialogue about how broadening our conception of family violence can help us develop a fuller understanding of its causes and create solutions that end it.

Tianna N. Gibbs, is Professor of Law and Director of the Gender Justice Clinic (GJC) at American University Washington College of Law (WCL). Her areas of expertise and scholarly interests include family law, domestic violence, race and the law, poverty law, and access to justice issues that impact litigants in high-volume courts. Professor Gibbs received the 2022 Junior Faculty Award from the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT).

Professor Gibbs is currently a member of the D.C. Child Support Guideline Commission and the District of Columbia Circuit Judicial Conference Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services. She was previously a member of the Steering Committee of the D.C. Bar Family Law Community, the D.C. Superior Court Paternity and Child Support Rules Drafting Committee, and the D.C. Superior Court Paternity and Child Support Subcommittee of the Family Court Implementation Committee.
