Hosted by the UC Irvine School of Law and the Center for Liberation, Anti-Racism, and Belonging (C-LAB), this workshop will highlight scholarship addressing the continuing problem of coerced labor and other forms of exploitation in the United States. The risks of abuse, physical injury, and maiming are high across many industries including those central to the American economy such as meat processing and agricultural industries. So is child labor especially in communities with significant immigrant residents. Addressing these problems requires understanding and mastering different legal systems regulating labor, immigration, agriculture, and food distribution. Drawing from different scholarly expertise, the scholars presenting at this workshop will help draw attention to the ways these legal systems work together to obfuscate the harms related to precarious work.
