What is academic freedom?

Please join us for a university-wide discussion of this timely and urgent question, and the many that flow from it, such as:

What rights does “academic freedom” uphold? Whose are they, exactly, and whom do they obligate? Does it depend on the aims and purposes of universities in general, and if so, how? Where did the idea come from and what role does the University of California play in that story? What are the gravest threats to academic freedom here and abroad, and what are some options for resisting them?

Panelists Include
Jeffrey Helmreich, Co-Director, Center for Legal Philosophy
Julia C. Lerch, Associate Professor of Sociology
Tyrus Miller, Dean, School of Humanities
Jane O. Newman, Professor of Comparative Literature
